Cave and Karst ScienceIn the Karst Science Department the living space of caves and the long tradition of speleology in Franconia are presented. Exhibits illustrate how hard limestone is dissolved by water on the surface and in the sub-surface, and partially built up again in a different location. The imprint of a maple leaf in calcareous tufa and the soot depositions from prehistoric time in the layers of a sliced stalactite indicate the significance of caves as archives for climate and history. Unique in southern Germany: the tiny bones of a cave bear baby alongside the massive skeleton of a fully grown cave bear. Department of society: Cave and Karst Science |
